>>>Door of Hope på nyheterna i SA

Ikväll ska det sändas en dokumentär om Door of Hope i Johannesburg på en av dem största Sydafrikanska nyhetskanalerna.

Följande är bakgrunden till nyhetsinslaget:

According to Joburg Child Welfare, the number of abandoned babies has tripled from only 8 cases a month last year, to over 32 a month this year.

In one of Joburg’s run down areas, the crime ridden 48 Hillbrow Street, we visit a church with a mission. Not only does the church preach the good news, they also have a “hole in the wall” where mothers desperate to get rid of the babies, can place them safely. Without state funding, this NGO says it depends on God’s grace to feed and clothe the babies.

In KwaMashu, a township near Durban, we met ugogo Miriam Cele who takes care of vulnerable children in her centre, uGozololo – meaning, stay here for a while. Ugogo Cele doesn’t believe in keeping babies in institutions so she gets the community involved by locating relatives or placing kids in the care of neighbours.

We spoke to two selfless mothers who receive abandoned babies straight from the police. They’ve been trained by Childline, as part of its Sunlight Safe House Project. These mothers keep babies until Child Welfare finds adoptive parents for them or relocates them to orphanages.
